![]() ![]() So there's a bit of realism there, and it makes environments feel like places that might genuinely exist (as much as impregnable fortresses in a ninja action sequence ever can). Your adventure through those environments begins as you wake to find your village of ninja warriors being invaded by armored soldiers with automatic weapons. They're indiscriminately shooting anything that lurks in the shadows, which will include you if you're not careful. Certainly, their targets include the guy who bravely rings the bell to sound the alarm. You don't want to share his fate, so you follow your newfound friend, a helpful ninja named Ora. She points you to powerful equipment and offers the sort of general advice a tutorial might, but without getting annoying like a Hylian fairy. ![]() Throughout the campaign's remainder, you spend more time alone than you do with a tour guide. Your body has been infused with ink that grants you power so tremendous that eventually it could consume your very mind. Before that happens, though, you mean to save your people from a danger that threatens to end them. So you sneak through the shadows and you chop up a lot of adversaries who clearly had it coming. You satisfy objectives and grab scrolls and always you move closer to the final moments of a story you know isn't likely to end happily. Mark of the Ninja features a variety of ways to solve most problems, which is one of the things I like most about it. I also appreciate that the available approaches are about equally viable. If you want, you can fell goon after goon, leaving a bloody trail in your wake (or just hiding the bodies in dumpsters and the like when evidence becomes inconvenient). Vents aren't just a good place to hide bodies they also let you sneak past sentries and security lasers.

The overworld enemy placement, as well as everyone’s movement during battle, comes from Chrono Trigger. The UI and turn-based system are inspired by Persona 5. Not only because Ichiban can’t shut up about Dragon Quest, but also because it seamlessly mixes elements from different classics of the genre, creating a unique beast of its own. This is a love letter to JRPGs in general. We’ve seen our fair share of boring playable characters in the past, such as Yakuza 4‘s Tanimura, but Kiryu was still featured in some way, making us ignore the boring bits while looking forward to the good ones. They all have their own agenda and motivations, which will eventually tie to the game’s overall plot.Īll of this won’t matter at all if the main protagonist isn’t someone as engaging as you would expect from a Yakuza protagonist. You’ll also meet the head honchos from each of Yokohama’s main crime syndicates: the secretive Korean family Geomijul, the Chinese syndicate Liumang, and the more traditional yakuza syndicate featured in here, the Seiryu Clan. You’ll meet all sorts of unusual human beings, from shady bartenders, masochists who can’t feel pain, businessmen wearing a Viewfiful Joe-inspired helmet, middle-aged strippers, an American tourist, a washed up Korean actor, and many more. The citizens of Yokohama are the reason this place is so endearing. Just like in real life, a city isn’t anything without the people that inhabit it. Yokohama might be the game’s brand new setting, but you can still visit Kamurocho in its entirety. I grew to love that dumpster of a place, so I was skeptical about relegating it to a secondary area to explore. I know that red light district like the back of my hand, being able to traverse it without the need of a minimap and I know where all the stores are, I know the name of every single street by heart. What a better way to showcase that your series is undergoing a brand new start than changing its setting? The thing is, Kamurocho is way too iconic to be ditched altogether. Despite being able to explore Kamurocho in its entirety, as well as Osaka’s Sotenbori district (the one from Yakuza 0), Yakuza: Like a Dragon is mainly set in a brand new city, Yokohama. Here he gradually meets a roster of new characters, and quickly becomes entangled on something big and occasionally epic. After trying to reconnect with some old faces, as well as finding out about some brand new and very harsh truths, he ends up in Yokohama. Which has him missing out on pretty much every single Yakuza story released up to that point. Some shady crap ensues and in order to protect his clan’s members from an imminent turf war, he volunteers to serve time in jail for the next nineteen years. The game starts off in the year 2000, with Ichiban working for yet another crime family under Kamurocho’s Tojo Clan, living life as usual. Like a Dragon‘s new protagonist is amateur gangster (and certified loser), Ichiban Kasuga. Calling him “likable” is a disservice to his mammoth-sized charisma. Moreover, the developers decided to ditch the series’ then-staple beat ’em up combat system in favor of something completely new, and completely nuts: a turn-based JRPG, in a move I like to call “the reverse Final Fantasy“. It’s a completely new saga, with brand new characters, but also the return of countless dudes and dudettes who have captivated our hearts over the past fifteen years. Yakuza: Like a Dragon is Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s proposal for a proper Yakuza sequel with no Kiryu. Yakuza: Like a Dragon, on the other hand, is a completely different case… However, despite being as good as any other game in the franchise, it felt more like a spinoff, not a true sequel. What would Yakuza be without Kiryu? Would it be possible to go on without him? Last year’s Judgment felt like an experiment to see if no Kiryu would work in a Yakuza setting. We were all curious to find out what Sega would do next with arguably its most important gaming franchise at the moment, as Sonic has been relegated to pure, absolute mediocrity at this point. After seven fantastic games, Kiryu’s saga had finally come to an end with the release of 2018’s Yakuza 6: The Song of Life. ![]() ![]() ![]() The very air around the geyser seemed darker, as if light failed to pass through it. Normally it was rather difficult to scout the great forest of Naroom, but the shadow geyser had killed off all the leaves, leaving the sickened trees naked and allowing the Arderians to see the forest floor. She and the other Arderians had been at this since the contest, keeping tabs on the forest and the geyser, and looking for anything out of the ordinary. Ora swept around the shadow geyser in a search pattern, scanning the forest below for any changes. Motash and her followers had lingered at Vash Naroom and done what they could to comfort folks, but then they, too, had gone home. Everyone assumed they had simply retired to their deeps. That's why many of the Moonlanders thought the Arderians were so wise. With their combined magic, Barak had managed to force his way into the geyser before the mysterious portal had closed up. Orwin had protested, of course, but his words fell of deaf ears, and the delegation from Cald charged the geyser. As expected, Barak and the Calders had gone ballistic, accusing Naroom of rigging the entire affair to distract the other regions while they gained all the glory for themselves. Tryn had led Evu away into the shadow geyser just as the final rounds of the contest were to be fought. On one occasion, I must have brushed my teeth so thoroughly (according to the in-game camera, at least) that it gave me a Master Ball to catch the Aerodactyl in front of me, guaranteeing 100% that I 'd be able to add it to my team. Occasionally it can be a little bit frustrating when the game doesn 't seem to register my speed, and I still only manage to catch the Pokémon about every other time I brush, but the failures motivate me just as much as the successes. With that knowledge, I 've been able to adapt the way I play (and brush). This time, when I threw the ball, I managed to capture it. I also found that adding an extra minute devoted more time to certain areas, and added an extra round of brushing the front rows.Īt the end of the round, the attacking Pokémon wasn 't hidden behind such a thick cloud, and I could tell at a glance that it was a Jigglypuff. I did my best to maintain this, brushing at angles that made my toothbrush movement clearer. When I started this time around, I noticed that the fewer times it told me to brush faster, the better I saw Bulbasaur battling against the bacteria Pokémon, and the cleaner the onscreen depiction of my teeth became. You can set up to three a day, in case you really like to brush. I decided to extend my brush time from the standard two minutes to three, for extra cleanliness, and to set a nighttime notification to remind me to play before bed. "īefore I booted up the second round, though, I checked out some of the brushing settings to see what I could play around with. I was a little disappointed, but it did make me kind of excited to try again the next morning and test my luck another time. I threw my Poké Ball to catch it… and it unceremoniously broke out and ran away. It gave me little stars when I was apparently doing well, but other times warned me that I was getting too close, or that it couldn 't properly see my toothbrush.Īt the end of two minutes, I felt pretty good about how I 'd brushed, and it gave me the opportunity to capture the attacking Pokémon, which was still engulfed in purple smoke. Often, it would tell me to "brush a little faster, " even though I felt it was going quite fast. The game defaulted to a two-minute brush, and I was slightly surprised at how little time the game devoted to brushing the fronts of the teeth, but I brushed along to the guide anyway, and did my best to keep up with the prompts. At the top of the screen, I saw my own face staring back unflatteringly from my self-facing camera as I brushed-but at least I was wearing a cute augmented reality Bulbasaur hat.Īll the while, the corner of the screen showed me which area of my teeth to focus on for that given moment. Since Bulbasaur is my all-time favorite starter, it was my go-to pick for my toothbrushing adventure.įrom there, the app took my right into the toothbrushing game, asking me to "Brush your teeth well to save Pokémon from cavity-causing bacteria! You’ll get uncompressed 5.1 and 7.1 audio in all of its glory, thanks to the higher bitrate. If you have an HDMI eARC output though, you’re golden. The main issue here is that you’ll need to make sure your TV supports Dolby Atmos passthrough to ensure you get the sound quality you’re seeking. The onboard controls were moved from the right side to the top center, and they’re now touch instead of physical buttons. Sonos also softened the design into a rounded cylinder instead of a boxy rectangle. The Arc is nearly 10 inches wider than the Playbar (45 inches total), which is necessary to accommodate the two additional drivers, but it’s not quite as deep.
